영문법 -2. 명 사 (Noun) Ⅱ-
Ⅰ. 명사의 수 (Number)
1. 규칙변화
1) 무성음 [p, t, k, f, Ɵ] + s → [s]
유성음 [b, d, g, v, ð, 모음] + s → [z]
∙desks [desks], ∙beds [bedz]
2) 어미가 -s, -x, -sh, -ch로 끝나거나, [s], [z], [ʃ], [tʃ], [dʒ]로 발음되면 -es를 붙이고
[iz]로 발음함.
∙ass [æs] → asses [æsiz] ∙bus → buses ∙glass → glasses
∙dish → dishes [diʃiz] ∙bench → benches ∙box → boxes
∙breeze [bri:z] → breezes [bri:ziz]
★주의 : 어미가 -ch인 단어의 복수형은 주의를 기울여야 한다.
[tʃ]로 발음 → -es 붙이고 [iz]
[k]로 발음 → -s만 붙이고 [s]로 발음
∙monarch[manək] → monarchs [manəks]
∙patriarch[peitria:k] → patriarchs [peitria:ks] 가장, 족장
∙stomach[stʌmək] → stomachs[stʌməks] 위
3) 어미가 -th로 끝나는 경우
① 단모음 + ths → [Ɵs]로 발음 : myth[miƟ] → myths[miƟs] 신화
② 장모음 또는 2중모음 + ths → [ðz]
∙path[pæ:Ɵ] → paths[pæðz] 길
∙bath[ba:Ɵ] → baths[ba:ðz] 목욕
∙mouth[mauƟ] → mouths[mauðz]
★mouth가 동사로 쓰일 땐 [mauð] 먹다, 연설하다
★bath의 동사형은 bathe[beið] 담그다, 목욕시키다
★bathing suit [beiðiɧ] [su:t] 수영복
★장모음 + r + ths에서는 ths가 [Ɵs]로 발음 : earth[ə:ɻƟ] → earths[ə:ɻƟs]
∙lady → lades[-z] ∙city → cities, ∙baby → babies
★예외 :
1) 고유명사인 경우 -s만 붙인다.
∙Henry → Henrys
2) 모음 + y는 -s만 붙인다.
∙day → days, ∙boy → boys
3) -quy로 끝나는 말은 모음 + y의 형태로 보고 그냥 -s만 붙이면 안됨.
-quy는 비록 모음(u) + y의 형태이나 발음이 qu[kw] 이므로 자음 + y로 보고
y를 i로 고친 뒤 -es를 붙임.
∙soliloquy[səliləkwi] 혼잣말 → soliloquies[səliləkwiz]
5) 자음 + o는 -es를 붙인 뒤 [z]로 발음.
∙potato → potatoes, ∙hero → heroes, ∙echo → echoes
★예외 : 자음 + o로 끝나는 단어 중 줄여서 된 말(automobile → auto)의 복수형은
-es 대신 -s를 붙임.
∙piano(pianoforte) → pianos ∙curio(curiosity) → curious 골동품
∙photo → photos ∙solo → solos
6) 어미가 -f, -fe인 단어는 f를 -v로 고친 뒤 -es를 붙인다.
∙half[ha:ɻf] → halves[ha:ɻvz] ∙wife → wives
∙calf[ka:f] → calves[ka:vz] 송아지 ∙leaf → leaves
★다음 단어는 -f, -fe로 끝나는 경우라도 -s만 붙일 것.
∙chief → chiefs ∙roof → roofs 지붕
∙cliff → cliffs 절벽 ∙dwarf → dwarfs 난쟁이
∙safe → safes 금고 ∙grief → griefs 슬픔, 비탄
∙proof → proofs 증거 ∙strife → strifes 투쟁, 싸움
∙gulf → gulfs 만(해안에서 사용)
7) 문자, 숫자, 약어의 복수형은 보통 's를 붙인다.
∙R → R's ∙8 → 8's ∙M.P → M.P's
2. 불규칙 변화
1) 모음이 변하거나 -en을 붙임
∙man - men ∙woman - women[wimin] ∙ ox - oxen ∙child → children
∙goose[gu:s] - geese[gi:s] ∙tooth - teeth ∙foot - feet
∙mouse - mice[mais] ∙louse[laus] - lice[lais]
2) 단수, 복수형이 같은 경우
∙deer ∙sheep ∙swine[swain] 돼지 ∙trout[traut] 송어 ∙species
∙salmon[sæmən] 연어, ∙corps[kɔ:ɻ] → corps[kɔ:ɻz] 군단 (발음에 주의)
∙series ∙Chinese ∙Swiss ∙carp 잉어
★foot : “발”의 복수형 → feet, “보병”의 복수형 → foot
horse : “말”의 복수형 → horses, “기마병”의 복수형 → horse
fish : 물고기의 종류 → fishes, 단순하게 물고기 마릿수 → fish
3. 외래어 복수
1) -um, -on으로 끝나는 낱말은 -a로...
∙datum - data
∙memorandum - memoranda
∙medium - media : 중간, 매개체
∙phenomenon - phenomena : 현상, 사건
2) 어미가 -us로 끝나는 단어는 -i로...
∙stimulus - stimuli : 자극
∙focus - foci : 초점
∙fungus - fungi : 균, 버섯
3) 어미가 -sis[sis]로 끝나는 낱말은 -ses[siz]로...
∙oasis[oueisis] → oases[oueisi:z] ∙thesis[Ɵi:sis] →theses[Ɵi:siz]
∙analysis → analyses ∙synthesis→syntheses : 종합
∙crisis → crises : 위기 ∙basis → bases
∙parenthesis[pərenƟisis] → parentheses[pərenƟisi:z]: 괄호
4. 이중 복수

∙dropper-in → droppers-in : 방문객
∙father-in-law → fathers-in-law : 장인, 시아버지
∙mother-in-law → mothers-in-law : 장모, 시어머니
∙brother-in-law → brothers-in-law : 처남
∙son-in-law → sons-in-law : 사위, 양자
∙stepmother → stepmothers
∙tooth-brush → tooth-brushes : 칫솔
★tooth-로 된 복합어는 뒤에 오는 명사만 복수로 고친다.
★주의 : manservant → menservants
2) 명사 또는 중요한 낱말이 없는 복합어는 끝에 -s 또는 -es
∙forget-me-not → forget-me-nots,
∙have-not → have-nots
∙go-between(중매인) → go-betweens(매개자)
∙merry-go-round → merry-go-rounds : 회전목마.
∙good-for-nothing → good-for-nothings : 쓸모 없는 자.
∙touch-me-not → touch-me-nots 봉선화
6. 상시 복수
1) 짝 또는 두 부분이 하나를 이루는 의류 및 도구의 명칭 (보통 복수 취급)
∙trousers ∙gloves ∙scissors ∙glasses ∙spectacles
∙tongs[taɧz] 부젓가락 ∙pants
2) 복수형태의 학과명 → 형태는 복수이나 단수 취급을 함 (단수동사)
∙economics ∙politics ∙physics ∙mathematics ∙phonetics ∙ethics
∙statistics[stətistiks] 통계학→단수취급, 통계(표)→복수취급
3) 기타 상시복수로서 복수 취급
∙goods ∙riches 재산 ∙valuables 귀중품 ∙belongings 소유물 ∙brains 두뇌
∙billiards 당구 ∙measles 홍역 ∙suburbs 교외 ∙works 공장 ∙shivers 오한
∙hysterics 히스테리 ∙savings 저금 (saving은 구조, 절약)
★news, means는 단수·복수 가능

8. 상호 복수
1) 두개 이상의 것이 상호적으로 작용해야 할 경우에는 반드시 복수형태를 해야한다.
∙shake hands with : ~와 악수하다.
∙change cars : 차를 갈아타다.
∙exchange seats with : 자리를 바꾸다.
∙be friends with : ~와 친구 사이다.
∙take turns : ~교대하다.
∙make friends with : ~와 친구가 되다.
∙exchange letters with : 편지를 교환하다.
∙be on good terms with : ~와 사이가 좋다.
9. 복수어미의 생략
1) 복수형 명사가 수사 다음에 와서 형용사적으로 쓰일 때 단수형.
∙He is two years old.
→He has a three-year-old daughter.
∙a goods train (goods는 그대로 형용사 역할을 한다)
2) 수사 + 복수명사가 형용사적으로 쓰일 땐 단수 사용.
∙a ten-mile race : 10마일의 경주
∙the three-power conference : 3대 강대국 회담
∙two-horse carriage : 쌍두마차
3) dozen, score, hundred, thousand, percent가 수사 다음에 올 때는 반드시 단수형 사용.
∙one dozen - three dozen ∙one hundred - five hundred
∙two score of eggs
★ score : “득점”의 뜻도 있지만 “20”의 數도 나타냄.
∙two score → 40 ∙three score and ten → 70
4) dozen, score, hundred, thousand, million 등이 막연한 수를 나타낼 땐 복수형 사용.
∙dozens of eggs : 여러 다스의 계란 ∙hundreds of people : 수백 명의 학생들
∙scores of books : 수십 권의 책
5) pair, couple 등이 짝을 나타낼 때에는 단수·복수 가능. (head는 항상 단수)
∙two pair(s) of shoes : 구두 두켤레 ∙four couple(s) of hounds : 4쌍의 사냥개
∙five head of oxen : 소 5마리
★head는 짐승의 머리 수를 셀 때 쓰이며 앞에 복수 수사가와도 항상 단수형으로 쓴다.
10. 복수형의 낱말을 단수 취급하는 경우
1) 학과명
∙physics ∙politics ∙mathematics ∙ethics
2) 복수형태의 국가명
∙The Netherlands ∙The Philippines ∙The United States (of America)
- 위의 국가명은 반드시 The를 사용하며 복수 취급한다.
3) 시간, 거리, 금액, 무게를 하나의 단위로 취급할 때에는 단수 취급한다. (시거금무)
∙Thirty miles is a good distance.
∙He comes here every three days. (=every third day)
4) 부분을 나타내는 말
∙half(반) �������� 추상명사������
∙the rest(나머지) �� of + 단수명사 �� → 단수동사.
∙a lot(많은) �� 물질명사������
∙most(대부분) ��
∙the majority(대부분) �� of + 복수명사 → 복수동사.

Ⅱ. 명사의 성(性, Gender)
1. 성의 표시법
1) 별개의 낱말을 사용하는 경우

2. 통성명사와 중성명사
1) 통성명사 : parent, monarch, spouse(배우자)
∙parent : father, mother
∙monarch : king, queen
∙spouse : husband, wife
∙friend : boyfriend, girlfriend
∙동물을 나타내는 통성명사의 대명사는 it로 받는다.
∙사자, 개와 같이 사나운 동물은 남성 취급을 하며 he로 받는다.
∙고양이, 앵무새 등과 같이 약한 동물은 여성 취급하여 she로 받는다.
∙child, baby 등은 it로 받는다.
2) 중성명사(무생물)의 의인화
∙남성명사 : 강하고, 맹렬하고, 위대한 것 (sun, war, anger, fear, day, ocean, winter...)
∙여성명사 : 아름답고, 우아하고, 가련한 것 (moon, peace, mercy, liberty, ship, spring...)
★국가명이 경제·사회·문화적 측면으로 쓰이면 여성 취급하여 she로 받는다.
★국가명이 국토나 지리적 측면으로 쓰이면 중성 취급하여 it로 받는다.
∙England is justly proud her poets. (국가, 여성)
∙America is rich in its natural resources. (국토, 중성)
Ⅲ. 명사의 격 (格, Case)
1. 소유격의 형성
1) 사람이나 동물의 소유격은 원칙적으로 's를 쓴다.
∙a man's stick
∙the cat's ear
∙men's books
2) 무생물의 소유격은 「of + 명사」의 형태로 표시한다.
∙the legs of the table
★ 단 시간, 거리, 금액, 무게를 나타낼 경우는 's 소유격을 쓴다. (시거금무)
3) -s로 끝나는 복수명사의 소유격은 '(apostrophe)만 붙인다.
∙girls' rings
4) 고유명사는 어미가 -s로 끝나더라도 's를 붙인다.
∙Charles's hat
∙Jones's Dictionary
★예외: 고대 희랍인, Jesus, Moses, Socrates, Columbus등의 고유명사는 -s로 끝날지라도
's만 붙여서 소유격을 만든다.
∙Jesus' disciples
∙Columbus' discovery of America
∙Venus' beauty
∙Socrates' death
5) 복합명사나 하나의 어군을 이루는 말의 소유격은 마지막에 's를 붙임.
∙father-in-law : 장인(복합명사)
∙fathers-in-law : 장인들
∙father-in-law's hat : 장인의 모자
∙fathers-in-law's hat : 장인들의 모자들
6) 동격명사의 소유격: 일반적으로 뒤에 있는 동격명사에 's를 붙인다.
∙my friend John's wife
∙my friend Tom's house
7) 각자소유와 공동소유
∙Tom's and Frank's books : Tom과 Frank가 각자 소유하고 있는 별개의 책.
∙Tom and Frank's books : Tom과 Frank가 공유하는 책.
2. 소유격의 의미
1) 소유자 : ∙Tom's book.
2) 저자, 발명자 :
∙Shakespeare's Macbeth
∙Edison's phonograph
3) 사용목적․대상 :
∙a girls' school ( = a school for girls)
4) 주격 관계(행위의 주체)
∙My daughter's death : 내 딸의 죽음(= My daughter died. 주격)
∙Mother's love of children.
∙John's sucess.
5) 목적격 관계(행위를 받는 것) 표시.
∙My daughter's education =Someone educates my daughter(내 딸의 교육)
∙Caesar's murderers = those who murdered Caesar.
∙Shakespeare's admirers = those who admire Shakespeare.
3. 소유격의 용법
1) 사람, 동물에 한해서는 원칙적으로 's를 쓰며, 무생물은 ��of + 명사��를 쓴다.
2) 무생물이 의인화 된 경우.
∙Fortune's smile: 운명의 미소
∙Heaven's will
∙Nature's works : 자연의 작품
∙Nature's lesson
3) 시간, 거리, 금액, 무게를 나타내는 명사 (시거금무) : 's 소유격을 쓰며 항상 단수 취급
∙today's paper : 오늘 신문
∙tomorrow's lesson : 내일 수업
∙a day's journey : 일일간의 여행
∙five minutes' walk: 도보로 5분 거리
∙ten miles' distance: 10마일의 거리
∙a pound's weight: 1파운드의 무게
∙ten pounds' weight
∙a dollar's worth of sugar.
∙The house stands within a stone's throw of the station.
∙a hair's breadth (위기일발)
∙two hour's rest
∙without an instant's warning (일각의 예고도 없이)
∙after several years' absence (수년만에)
4) 독립 소유격
㉠ 소유격('s) 다음에 오는 house, shop, office, store, place 등의 공공 건물, 상점, 집 등은
생략한다.
∙my uncle's (house)
∙St. James's (Palace)
∙the bookseller's (shop)
㉡ 같은 명사가 되풀이 될 때 반복을 피하기 위해서 소유격 다음에 오는 명사는 생략함.
∙This book is my brother's (book)
5) 이중소유격
∙a, an, this, these, that, those, some, any, no, which, what, such, each, every 등은
소유격과 함께 나란히 쓸 수 없다.
즉 a, an, this… + 명사 + of + 소유대명사의 형태로 써야한다.
∙this my father's camera ( X )
∙this camera of my father's ( O )
∙that big house of John's
∙It is no fault of the doctor's.
6) 관용적 표현
∙for mercy's sake : 제발 ∙for conscience' sake : 양심상
∙at one's wits'(wit's) end : 어찌할 바를 몰라
∙at one's finger('s) ends : ~에 정통하여
∙I am at my wit's end.
∙She revenged herself to her heart's content. (실컷 한을 풀었다.)
∙She has English at her finger's ends.
∙for form's sake : 형식 때문에
∙for pity's sake : 제발
∙for convenience's sake : 편의상, 형편상
∙at a journey's end : 여행의 막바지에
