영문법 - 명사 (Noun) 1 -
Ⅰ. 명사의 종류
: 고유명사, 추상명사, 보통명사, 물질명사, 집합명사 (고추보물집)
① 셀 수 있는 명사 : 단수, 복수가 가능하며 many, few 등으로 수식 (보통, 집합명사)
② 셀 수 없는 명사 : 단수, 복수가 없으며 much, little 등으로 수식 (물질, 고유, 추상명사)
1. 보통명사 (Common Noun)
1) 정의
∙일정한 형태를 가진 같은 종류의 것에 일반적으로 공통되어 쓰이는 명사
∙언제나 단수·복수의 수가 명백해야 하므로, 보통명사 앞에는 a, an, the, some, any,
this 등이 와야 하며, 복수형의 경우엔 -s(es)를 붙인다.
This is book. (×)
This is a book. (○)
There are some books. (○)
2) 종족 대표
∙다음과 같은 표현으로 어떤 종족의 개체가 아닌, 전체를 대표함
① A(an) + 단수보통명사. (대표단수)
A horse is a useful animal.
② The + 단수보통명사. (대표단수)
The horse is a useful animal.
③ 복수보통명사. (대표복수)
Horse are useful animal.
3) The + 단수보통명사 = 추상적인 의미
∙The pen is mightier than the sword.
∙What is learned in the cradle is carried to the grave.
∙When one is reduced to poverty, the beggar will come out.
4) a~ of a ... : ~와 같은 ...
∙A saint of a husband and a devil of a wife. (성자 같은 남편, 악마 같은 아내)
∙The war made him leave an angel of a wife for good. (천사 같은 아내)
∙That fool of a John has forgotten to clean my shoes. (바보 같은 John)
∙He will often go out with his family of a Sunday. (일요일 같은 날에는)
2. 집합명사와 군집명사 (Collective Noun, Noun of Multitude)
1) 정의
∙집합명사는 집합체를 구성하고 있는 개체를 하나의 단체 취급을 하므로 단수 취급
∙군집명사는 집합체를 구성하고 있는 개체를 낱낱이 취급하므로 복수 취급
∙The audience was a large one. (집합명사)
∙The audience were deeply impressed. (군집명사) → 개별적으로 깊은 감명

① Police형 집합명사 : 부정관사도 복수형도 안되며, 보통 the와 함께 쓰여 복수 취급
∙The police (경찰들) → a policeman (경찰 한사람)
∙The clergy (성직자들) → a clergyman (성직자)
∙The nobility (귀족들) → a nobleman (귀족)
∙The peasantry (농민들) → a peasant (농민 한사람)
② Cattle형 집합명사 : cattle, people, poultry, vermin
∙단지 약간 수의 모임이며, 집합의 한계가 없으므로 관사도 안 붙고 복수형도 없이
그대로 복수 취급되어 복수동사를 받는다.
∙Cattle are grazing in the pasture
③ Family형 집합명사 : nation, army, people, party
∙집합의 한계가 명료하며, 집합체를 단위로 셀 수있으므로 단수, 복수 가능.
∙many people(많은 사람들), some people(어떤 사람들)처럼 people이 “사람들”의 뜻으로
쓰일 땐 군집명사 → 복수 취급
∙people이 국민, 민족의 뜻으로 쓰일 땐 집합명사 → 단수 취급

그 수가 결정된다.
* The rest of the boys are playing baseball.
3. 물질명사 (Material Noun)
1) 정의
∙주로 물건의 재로가 되는 물질을 나타내는 명사
∙재료, 원소, 액체, 기체, 식료품, 기타를 표시
∙wood, stone, wool, sand, snow, water, oxygen, air, chalk, money, paper, furniture 등
2) 집합적 물질명사
∙furniture(가구), clothing(의류), merchandise(상품), produce(농산물), game(사냥감),
baggage(소포) 등의 단어는 물건의 집합체이지만 양을 나타내는 물질 명사로 취급
∙집합적 물질명사는
① 부정관사 a, an을 붙일 수 없고 단수 취급 (물질명사이므로)
② a piece of~, an article of~, much, little 등으로 양 표시를 한다.
3) 물질명사의 보통명사화
① 제품 �� Glass is apt to break. 유리 → 물질명사

│ He wears glasses. 안경 → 보통명사
│
�� He has a glass in his hand. 유리잔 → 보통명사
�� paper (종이) → 물질
│
�� the paper (서류, 신문) → 보통
�� copper (구리) → 물질
│
�� a copper (동전한닢) → 보통
② 구체적으로 셀 수 있는 개체
�� The bridge is built of stone. 돌 → 물질
│
�� The boy picked up a stone. 돌멩이 → 보통
③ 종류 �� Wine is made from grapes. 술 → 물질
│
│ This is a good wine for health. 좋은 술 → 보통
│
�� They sell various wines at that store. 여러 가지 술 → 보통
④ 사건을 나타낼 때 (구체적 현상)
�� Fire burns wood. 불 → 물질명사
│
�� They was a fire last night. 화재 → 보통
⑤ 물질명사가 한정이 될 때는 정관사 the를 사용.
∙Water is turned into steam by heat. → 물질명사
∙The water in this glass is not good to drink. (유리잔 속에 한정된 물)
4) 물질명사의 수량표시

∙shower [ʃauə]: 소나기. 샤워.
[ʃouə]: 보이는 사람. 보이는 물건.
4. 고유명사 (Proper Noun)
1) 정의
∙특정한 사람, 장소, 건물에 쓰이는 고유의 명사이며, 첫자는 대문자로 쓴다.
∙인명, 지명, 배, 공공 건물의 이름 : Lincoln, New York, the Mayflower, Seoul Station
∙신문, 잡지, 서적, 종교의 이름 : the London Times, the Atlantic, Buddhism, etc.
∙천체의 이름 : Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, etc.
∙국민, 국어 : Korean, Chinese, English, etc.
∙달, 요일, 기념일 : January, Sunday, Christmas, etc.
2) 고유명사의 보통명사화
① 국민 한사람, 가족, ~의 집안 사람의 뜻일 때
∙He is a Swiss. 스위스 사람
∙His father is a Lincoln. 링컨 가문의 사람
∙The Bakers loved to entertain others. 베이커씨 부부
∙the + 고유명사의 복수형 : Baker씨 일가족, Baker씨 부부
② ~라는 사람 (a certain)의 뜻
∙A Mr. Lee called you up in your absence.
③ 제품, 작품을 나타낼 때
∙He bought a Ford. 포드 자동차 한대
∙There are two Rembrandts in the gallery. 두 점의 렘브런트 작품
④ ~과 같은 사람, 사물(성질을 나타냄)을 나타낼 때
∙A Newton cannot become a Shakespeare.
∙He is the Newton of the age. 형용사구. (당대의)
∙Pusan will be a New York. (=a city like New York)
∙고유명사 다음에 형용사구가 와서 수식이 되는 경우에는 반드시 the를 사용한다.
⑤ 같은 이름이 둘 이상 있을 때
∙There are three Toms and two Browns in our class.
5. 추상명사 (Abstract Noun)
1) 정의
∙성질, 상태, 동작 등 무형의 것을 나타내는 명사 (love, honesty, happiness 등)
2) 추상명사의 보통명사 및 집합명사화
∙종류, 구체적 행동, 어떤 성질의 소유자를 나타낼 때.
① He was wild in his youth. (청춘시절) → 추상명사
② He is an ambitious youth. (청년) → 보통명사
③ Youth should respect age. (젊은이들 - 늙은이들) → 보통명사
④ She has beauty and intelligence. → 추상명사
⑤ She was once a beauty. (미인) → 보통명사
⑥ The beauty of the scenery is beyond description. → 추상명사
⑦ Happiness consists in contentment. → 추상명사
⑧ I now have the happiness of being with you.
3) 추상명사의 수량표시

∙a man of ability = an able man
∙a man of experience = an experienced man
∙a man of wisdom = a wise man

∙of use = useful, of valuable = valuable
∙of experience = experienced
∙of importance = important
5) 전치사 + 추상명사 = 부사구

∙He is kindness itself.

7) Have + the + 추상명사 + to do
∙He had the kindness to help me. (have + the + 추상명사 + to do)
= He was so kind that he helped me. (so + 형 + that + S + V)
= He was so kind as to help me. (so + 형 + as to do)
= He was kind enough to help me. (형 + enough + to do)
= He kindly helped me. (부사 + 동사)
6. CH. GH의 발음
1) -CH의 발음은 [tʃ], [k], [ʃ] 세 종류로 발음이 됨.
① [tʃ]로 발음되는 경우 (거의 대부분)

① 다음과 같은 어미로 끝나는 낱말은 2음절 앞에 accent가 있다.

∙-sion : occasion, confusion, decision ★예외 : television
∙-ian : musician, comedian
∙-cial : official, especial
∙-tial : presidential
∙-ious : licentious
∙-cience, -ciency, -cient : deficiency, sufficient
∙-ity, -ety : ability, activity, anxiety
∙-sive : exclusive
∙-ical : botanical, mechanical
∙-ic : energetic
★예외 : catholic[kæƟəlik], lunatic[lu:nətik], politic[palətik], politics[palətiks]
arithmetic[ərismətik] 산수, arithmetical[ærismetikal] 산수의
∙-logy : geology
∙-pathy : apathy
∙-graphy : geography, photography
★주의 : photograph [foutəgra:f], telegraph [teligra:f]
∙-meter, -metry : barometer, geometry
∙-nomy : astronomy
② 다음 어미로 끝나는 낱말은 바로 그 음절에 accent가 있다.
∙-ee : employee

∙-ese : chinese
∙-oon : balloon
∙-oo : bamboo, taboo ★예외 : cuckoo [kuku:]
∙-esque : picturesque
∙-ette : cigarette
③ 다음 어미로 끝나는 낱말은 전전 음절에 accent가 있다.
∙-ate : accurate
